Baseline emissions footprint

Baseline year: 2023

Due to a lack of historic data, Land Recovery Rail Limited has chosen the 2023 calendar year (the most recent full reporting period) as our baseline for the purposes of tracking our progress towards Net Zero.

Please note that while every effort has been made to ensure data is as accurate as possible, we will be re-baselining the below 2023 greenhouse gas emission calculations during 2024 to account for substantial organisational changes towards the end of the 2023 reporting period, when headcount and operational activity grew significantly.

Emissions reduction targets

Land Recovery Rail Limited has committed to a long-term target of achieving net zero by 2050 at the latest.

In practice, this equates to a 90% absolute reduction in Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 2050 from our 2023 baseline. The remaining emissions will be balanced by emissions removals to achieve net zero.

To ensure we make tangible and continuous progress towards our long-term target, we have also adopted near-term targets in line with the recommendations of the Science-based Targets Initiative:

  • 42% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 from our 2023 base
  • 25% absolute reduction in in-scope Scope 3 emissions by 2030 from our 2023 base

These targets are set out in the chart below and we will track progress against them annually.

Additional near-term targets will be set as required to ensure we continue to make progress in line with the latest climate science.

Carbon Reduction Projects

Land Recovery Rail Limited is certified to the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard. During 2024 and over the coming years we will be exploring a range of further measures to reduce our carbon and environmental impact.

A materiality analysis of our 2023 emissions shows that our impact is overwhelmingly caused by the activities of our fleet and plant (Scope 1), as shown by the associated chart.

Reducing our Scope 1 emissions from fleet and plant is therefore our core carbon reduction priority.

Projects underway

As of the date of this report, we are undergoing the assessment phase for achieving FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) Gold Standard.

This voluntary standard helps fleet operators to improve performance in a range of areas, including fuel efficiency and environmental impact.
As part of our work towards FORS Gold compliance we are exploring options for eco-driver training, which can reduce fuel consumption by up to 25%.

We also have telematics systems installed in our fleet and are developing an insights dashboard and KPI metrics to guide us towards continual improvements in fuel efficiency, route optimisation and load consolidation.

Projects under consideration

In addition to improving efficiency, we are exploring alternatives to using diesel in vehicles and plant. Options under consideration include:

  • Upgrading selected plant to low consumption hybrid models
  • Exploring the feasibility of using HVO (hydrogenated vegetable oil) as a low carbon drop-in replacement for diesel
  • Exploring the feasibility of upgrading our lighter-load vans to electric models.

Other projects

We are also exploring options to reduce our wider emissions, including:

  • Switching to a renewable electricity tariff for our primary site in Carlisle
  • Investigating options for improving energy efficiency at our Carlisle site, such as lighting upgrades, insulation and heating upgrades
  • Considering projects to engage our full workforce in low carbon behaviours and decision-making, such as Carbon Literacy training.

During 2024 we will be appointing a lead member of our team to take responsibility for managing these and other sustainability initiatives.
